“Local Hero Searching for Gold”
In 1996 Michelle Gibson and her equine partner, Peron, won Olympic bronze for her performance in dressage. Now Michelle, a Roswell native begins the long and difficult task of returning to Olympic competition. Dressage is the equine sport of precision riding that highlights the elegance and grace of the horse. There are only a handful of horse/rider combinations in the world that can successfully compete at the Olympic level. Michelle leaves for Germany and Holland the second week of November to find that one horse that will bring Gold.
“Bronze isn’t good enough,” said a resolute Gibson. “America deserves gold in the 2004 equestrian Olympics and I am determined to get it for us.” Europe and especially Germany have dominated the world dressage competition for much of Olympic history. “I was heartbroken when Peron died” she said but it is time to move on and “I am determined to find the right horse to compete in Greece in 2004”
Called by some, “America’s secret weapon” Michelle Gibson is clearly one of the most talented dressage riders in the world. Gibson has spent much of her time since the 1996 Olympics raising money, teaching and promoting the sport of dressage. She has a web site at www.michellegibson.com where one can learn more about the beauty and strength of the dressage horse and about this determined individual.
